Let's Talk Turkey (and Trusts)

By Marty Elberg · 1 min read

Estate planning might not seem like ideal dinner conversation, but if handled with sensitivity, the holidays provide a rare and perfect setting. Why? Because the people who matter most are all under one roof.

The key is approach, not pressure. Bring it up as something you're doing yourself:

"I finally got my Will updated, and I feel so much better knowing it's done. Have you all thought about that kind of thing yet?"

Choose the right moment, maybe after dessert or during a quiet walk. Don't dive into numbers or distributions. This isn't the time for details. Focus on the benefits of planning: avoiding conflict, making sure medical decisions are respected, and lifting a burden off loved ones.

Open-ended questions that help

  • "What would you want if you couldn't speak for yourself?"
  • "Have you talked to someone about a health care directive?"

These open the door to real, heartfelt discussions. Lead by example, and others will follow.
