Families Come in All Shapes and Sizes

By Marty Elberg · 1 min read

The "traditional" family is just one version of the American story. Many of our clients have bonus (blended) families, lifelong partners they aren't legally married to, or close friends who serve as their main support system. Unfortunately, standard Florida statutes don't always recognize these bonds.

Without a specific plan, the state's default rules decide who gets your assets and who makes your medical decisions, often leaving out the people you're actually closest to.

For blended families

  • Clearly outline beneficiaries to avoid misunderstandings between spouses, children, and stepchildren.
  • Consider a trust that keeps your current spouse financially secure while preserving assets for children from a previous marriage.
  • Update beneficiary designations. Many people forget to update life insurance, retirement accounts, and bank accounts after remarrying.
  • Talk openly. A well-structured plan plus honest conversations helps minimize conflict.

We help you create a plan that mirrors your actual life and protects your chosen family.
